What is Discrimination in workplace
Discrimination
goes against everything that makes us human. Someone's rights are being
violated only because of who they are or what they believe in. Discrimination
is detrimental and keeps inequality alive.
As MacDonald L.A., Pulley L., Hein M.J., Howard V.J. (2014) says regardless of our race, ethnicity, nationality, class, caste, religion, belief, sex, gender, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics, age, health, or any other status, we all have the right to be treated equally. Yet all too frequently, we hear terrible tales of people who endure cruelty just because they are members of a "different" group than others who enjoy luxury or power.
When
a person is denied the opportunity to exercise their human rights or other
legal rights on an equal basis with others due to an arbitrary distinction
imposed in practice, law, or policy, this is known as discrimination. The
non-discrimination principle serves as the foundation for Amnesty
International's operations. To ensure that everyone can exercise their rights
equally, we challenge discriminatory laws and practices in collaboration with
communities around the world.
Discrimination occurs when a worker is treated unfavorably in the workplace due to his/her gender, sexuality, religion, race, pregnancy, maternity or disability. (Høgh A., Mikkelsen E.G., Hansen A.M. 2011)
Direct discrimination is occurring when someone is treated less than others. If someone treats another differently because of their different characteristics to other members is unlawful. As an example, if the employee is turned down as if you think they might start a new family soon although he/she has the qualifications to do the job , this is called a discrimination.

Direct discrimination can also take place when someone is paid less than other employees without justification, when you choose certain employees for redundancy based on protected characteristics, when you fail to make reasonable accommodations for a disabled employee, when you fire someone for reporting allegations of discrimination, or when you unfairly deny a new parent's request for flexible scheduling.
Indirect discrimination happens when certain policies or procedures disfavor specific employees. For instance, requiring that all employees work on Sundays might be construed as discriminating against Christians who observe it as a day of worship. Despite the fact that you may receive the same treatment as everyone else, you are affected differently and to a greater extent because of who you are. This is discrimination as well. This is what the Equality Act of 2010 refers to as indirect discrimination.
Types Of Employment Discrimination
- Race and Color Discrimination.
- National Origin Discrimination.
- Sex Discrimination.
- Religious Discrimination.
- Military Status Discrimination.
- Retaliation.
There are four main types of discrimination.
- Direct discrimination.
- It entails treating one person less favorably than another due to a protected feature.
- Indirect discrimination.
- Harassment.
- Victimization.

Are the differences between people a reason to celebrate or a source of problems?
ReplyDeleteThey can be problematic if you harbor prejudice and deep-seated animosity. However, if people can mature and put the past behind them, differences may be a lot of fun.
DeleteEvery worker should be treated equally regardless of their gender, nationality, religion or anything else. Everyone should be given equal opportunity and I think your article will make people aware of the discrimination in workplace.
ReplyDeleteOf course, In most of the workplaces we have these challenges regarding discrimination. I'm writing this article to make all aware of this.
DeleteThank you Madusha for your idea.
Harassment is a word that we hear regularly these days. Most of the time, employees in organizations who are having traditional cultures are being harassed and bullied by their superiors, colleagues, and even subordinates but neither complaint nor investigation is filed many times. Highly appreciated for discussing of the topic and looking forward to seeing good content like this.

DeleteIt is really admirable to see this article addressing one of the most critical issues we face. How do you believe employees should react to indirect harassment in the workplace?
ReplyDeleteAs I think having rules and procedures in place that demonstrate you did everything possible to prevent harassment from occurring is the best strategy to lessen your liability should harassment ever occur. An added benefit of having a harassment policy is that it will enable you to handle employee complaints more skillfully.
DeleteAccording to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), harassment can include “offensive jokes, slurs, epithets or name calling, physical assaults or threats, intimidation, ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, offensive objects or pictures, and interference with work performance. This is a main part we all need to concentrate in every workplace.
ReplyDeleteYes Manoj, Thanks for your valuable comment.
DeleteYou have selected a most valuable topic.every employee should be treated equally without any direct or indirect discriminations.
ReplyDeleteof course, Thanks for your appreciation and the comment.
DeleteGreat to see your article on a very timely topic which is not addressed by many. Harassment in the workplace has become a critical concern lately since most of the employees are afraid and are in a myth of losing their jobs or reputation if they make complains or seek HR support regarding harassments and they tend to mute themselves by not reacting against it. I believe that employees should be given more awareness regarding how HR is always there to protect them and their basic rights.
ReplyDeleteYou have chosen a sensitive topic & situation we faced in an organization. Every worker should be treated equally regardless of their gender, nationality, religion or anything else. Everyone should be given equal opportunity.

Situationally we face this matter . lot of time can't avoid. As HR Dep. always there to avoid discrimination.
ReplyDeleteUncommon topic and there are more reliable ideas in here.but some jobs like heavy work in industry.these are very difficult to do every employee even though you talk about sexual discrimination in here
ReplyDeleteYou are chosen a very valuable topic that useful for the present society.
ReplyDeleteI think that these problems can solve by creating some activities in the workplace such as
Create good hiring policies .
Train employees .
Train managers and supervisors.
Establish a Zero Tolerance Policy Against Religious Harassment and Discrimination.
When an individual or group of people is treated unfairly or unequally in the workplace due to particular qualities, discrimination has occurred. Race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, handicap, sexual orientation, religious views, and national origin are examples of these protected qualities. It is possible for coworkers, job candidates, or employees and their employers to engage in discrimination at work. Discrimination is illegal whether it is done knowingly or unintentionally.
